5 Ways to Celebrate the Holidays

Tonya Coppin • Dec 22, 2021

From the management and staff of Global resources and supports, we want to wish you a warm and safe Holiday season. Please ensure that you are following all the safety guidelines to ensure your family and friends are all safe during the holidays.

Safety tips for the holidays

• This is a good time of the year to do a walk-through and check the home for electrical hazards and fire hazards. Turn on interior lights, walk around to make sure there is no light bulb or an electrical issue.

• Check heating and cooling units to make sure they are in good working order.

• Inspect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check batteries at least once a year, and replace the batteries if they are over-the-counter type.

• Keep children away from fireplaces.

• Keep lawn furniture away from the house.

• If a tree has fallen on your property, make sure the area around it is clear of obstructions, such as branches, logs, propane tanks, and other objects.

What you should do to prepare

Visit the emergency preparedness page on grs.n.ca to get the details on what to do in an emergency and what to look for in your emergency kits, in order to prepare yourself and your family for any disaster or crisis situation. Please stay informed about the disaster plans you have in place and what needs to change or improve so you and your family will be prepared if a disaster occurs.

5 Ways to Celebrate the Holidays with your family and friends.

Celebrate the holidays without worrying about everything! Whether you're spending time with your family or friends, there are some simple ideas to ensure everyone is having a wonderful time.

Escape your house: Have everyone come to your house, it's fun to have people you can count on.

How to make this a memorable and safe holiday season

1. Plan ahead.

2. Dress in layers, especially in the evenings and nights.

3. Carry a small pocket/bag of dry/crisp clothes. This should include a blanket, pillow, or sleeping bag, along with your winter shoes.

4. Walk only on well-lit areas, avoiding isolated areas.

5. Be sure to wear or carry a flashlight.

6. Know your limits. Know the route you are taking, the weather, and your ability to carry on.

7. Know your routes. If you are able to ride, check the weather, watch for slick spots on the road.

8. Know your mode of transportation. Is it feasible to walk, cycle, or carpool?

9. Choose safe options for food.

10. Avoid over-indulging in alcohol.

11. Carry a set of numbers with you (e.g., that could be used to call for help in an emergency), like one of those phones on a keychain.

Tips for your close family and friends

1. Have a plan and open communication with your loved ones

2. Be your child's eyes and ears

3. Ensure that your family knows their child's safety plan

4. Always have a plan in place and a way to communicate in case of an emergency

5. Let your child know your rules and expectations

With all that’s going on in our communities, please remember to have a very safe and happy holiday season.
